Underwater Rendering Study

The goal of this illustration was to learn to paint water, when seen through a camera lens. A good exercise for me in painting floating particles, caustics, depth, god rays, bubbles and reflections.
I wanted to make the illustration feel like it was a "random underwater encounter" shot by a scuba diver on the spot or a random frame taken from a sequence in a nature documentary.
This is why the shark is not featured prominently, central to the image or posed in a really interesting way: He's just caught swimming, on his way to his next meal...
Fun fact: I painted this one during a 10 hours flight back to Vancouver, on Ipad using Procreate.
